Catholic Renewal Brings About A Positive Change In Thinking

By Claudette Lambert

During the early 20th century, a movement, which is now known as the catholic renewal, started in the Roman Catholic Church. The movement gained momentum and soon it was being followed by all the churches. This was over a century ago, but even today one finds people wondering about that time-and they still is debate whether it was to the benefit of the people or not.

These reforms highlighted many areas in which the church was lacking and people felt that with time the church should also progress. One of the areas which were highlighted was translation of the Bible. Originally the Bible was in Latin. Those who do not know Latin found it difficult to understand the texts and portions.

To make sure that all followers understand the Holy Book, it was agreed that the texts and certain portions be translated to the mother tongue of the followers. This was welcomed by the people because this meant that they would be able to read it themselves, without having to rely on anyone else.

Study also helps in staying connected to our faith. As long faithful keep reading and studying the teachings, and listening to what the seniors preach, the process of deepening of faith continues. This is the actual purpose of having so many translations of the Holy Book.

The second change was brought related to the services in Church, or what is more often called liturgy. It was argued that mostly people do not understand the reason behind the way ceremonies are held, but still participate in them because they are asked to. It was further said that there was a reason and a history behind every ceremony and every event, and it is important that people understand this.

Nobody could ask or think about the significance of these services. People just went about with the services out of fear or a sense of duty. The purpose of the reform was to make people aware of this, and to encourage them to learn about such things first, and participate in them only when they are conscious and alert, and know what they are doing.

This practice is common not just in Christianity but in almost all the religions across the world. The scriptures are all in languages that were used in earlier days and with which people are no longer familiar. Yet, very few people make efforts to try to understand the depth of its teachings.

There is a purpose behind every service that a person is asked to perform, and one should be aware of them. When one is asked to do something in their offices, they question the purpose and the importance of that action, and they should have the same curiosity about faith too. This is the only way one will be able to deepen our faith further.

Faith is based on two basic things, practice and study. Both are equally important and the absence of any one would mean that one is lacking somewhere. And this was the reason why catholic renewal also happened. It was a means to bring people closer to their religion and to their faith.
