Getting Your Existing Space To Work For You

By Lani Hudson

You need more storage space in your home but don't want to embark on a major renovation just yet. It is either you do not have the money yet or there are just so many things that you have to attend to like work or business. Never fret, because there are easy, inexpensive ways to address the problem.

Look around your home to spot any space or area that can serve as additional storage for some of your things. There may be a blank wall in the lounge room where you can install open shelves for items that are worth displaying like souvenirs from your previous trips and the best family photos that you have. Invest in boxes with lids where you can tidily organize photos and small knick knacks so they will not clutter the tops of tables or kitchen counters.

Opt for double duty furniture as a way to enjoy more floor space. Should you have visitors who frequently sleep overnight and you don't have a guest room, you might be better off having a day bed or a sofa bed rather than a regular couch at the living room. In the bedroom, a study table can also function as a vanity table when fitted with a mirror. Another trick is to use a glass-top dining or coffee table if you want to make the space appear bigger.

Take time to sort your things and decide which of them you want to throw away, give out, and keep. For the things that you do not want to keep anymore, you may either put them up for sale or simply give them away to friends or neighbors who may probably find them still valuable. These can be old clothes, shoes, your children's outgrown toys, and kitchen appliances which you don't want to maintain anymore. You not just gain more space, you also get to earn extra money.

For things that you just cannot give up easily but can't be accommodated in your home due to limited space available, self storage facilities can be your best bet. Consider these storage space solutions as the extension of your house where you can keep important things that you do not use too often. Examples are seasonal home decors, special occasion clothes, or any item that holds a sentimental value to you and your family.
