Goal Setting Makes Success Possible

By Darrin Wiggins

Every day, people launch new businesses and/or begin new projects at work or home. Far too many of these start-ups fail before they even get going. A major reason is that the people involved try to tackle the whole thing and find they have bitten off more than they could chew. This is why goal setting should be an initial steps taken when beginning any project.

Of course, the final finished project or success of a business is a goal to aim for. However, reaching this requires several smaller steps. For this reason, it is best to break it up right from the start and establish realistic goals for the completion of each step.

An important first goal of a person trying to start a new business should be to create a written business plan. It will be important to make this document clear, concise, and complete. This will be an essential portion of a next step, which will likely be securing financing for the venture.

Obtaining such financing would be another key goal that must be met in starting a business. It is easy to see how completion of this first step makes the second one easier as banks are more apt to loan money to someone with a sound business plan in place that outlines what the business will provide and how.

Creating a beautifully landscaped garden is another good example. Of course, the final goal of having a beautiful garden is important, but one will have to look at the work it will take to accomplish this.

One will want to research local plants to see what grows best in that particular area. Testing of the soil will reveal any deficiencies in nutrients and how to best fertilize to ensure healthy plants. Providing the correct amount of water for each species will be necessary. Each of these steps can be considered one of the goals to be completed as one works toward completion of the project.

This process can be applied to any type of project. Breaking things down into smaller chunks and establishing a time frame in which each step is to be accomplished makes large projects move much faster and more smoothly. It also makes it possible to divide the work and make different members of the family or group responsible for the completion of their own individual goals.

Goal setting is only a small part of the process. However, it is one of the most important. The thing that must be remembered is to keep each of the goals realistic. This means making sure that it is possible to complete that portion of the project in the time established as well as making sure that money is available to cover any expenses associated with completing each of the goals along the way. Realistic expectations must be maintained at all times. This process is used by everyone who has succeeded in business, completing DIY projects at home, and practically every other kind of project imaginable.
