Humorous Delivery With Funny Sermon Illustrations

By Andrea Davidson

Funny sermon illustrations make services lively and help the preacher to put the readings in perspective. They may be used at the beginning, in the middle or the end of a homily. They lift the mood of the congregation and help the people to refocus after a long session. Experts have suggested that they are more memorable than the plain sermon and have a long lasting effect.

Each congregation is different and requires a different approach when illustrating. The stories fit mothers, fathers, children, adults, elderly, youths, etc. Depending on the context. Others are for general use and can be applied in a variety of situations. The choice of an illustration determines whether the people will follow your delivery and find it meaningful. It must be used at the right time and to the right group. Other differences regard various seasons in the spiritual ream.

A session for couples would enjoy this story where a son was sitting by the door with his head fallen. The dad was concerned as he returned to the house and enquired in a low tone. The son turned to him and indicated that whatever he said should remain between them. The father would be surprised when the son said that just like him, he could not stand the woman inside the house. It is a caution on how couples should be careful with the things they say around their children.

On the witty faithful, a man only appeared in church on Christmas morning. It was tradition for the pastor to welcome everyone to the army of the lord at the door. He noted that the last time this man appeared was the same time a year ago. The man was quick enough to say that he served in the secret service of the same army. That was the justification to why he could not be seen as often as possible.

Another illustration used to teach people about paying attention in church says that a pastor always started his sermons with the words, The Lord Be With You. The congregation would answer back, And Also With You. This turned out to be a mechanical chorus. One day the microphone developed problems and the pastor said, There is Something Wrong with the Microphone. The congregation as usual said And Also With You.

There are important days in the life of a religious man. They are baptism, wedding and burial. The funny part is that on the first day, people will throw water. On his wedding day, they will throw grains of rice. By the time he is dying, they are fed up and can only throw dust.

The wife of a pastor returned home tired after long Christmas Eve and morning services. The husband could not understand since it was expected that he should be tired instead, for delivering five sermons. The wife was frank to say that it was she who had to listen through all of them.

Pastors who manage to incorporate funny sermon illustrations will find it effective. It is one of the tricks used to put the reading of the day in perspective. An illustration can be used to give the same scripture a totally different meaning.
