How to Write a Winning Cover Letter

By Janet Ronald

If you are in the job hunting process, you will need to come up with a fantastic cover letter. This is your introduction to your prospective employer and speaks volume about you. You therefore want it to be impressive. It is the first opportunity for a prospective employer to get to know you and it is important that you make a first impression.

Remember this is like a sales pitch and the product you are selling is yourself, so the letter needs to reflect that. Many employers never read beyond this letter if it is less than impressive. Your letter should engage their attention long enough for them to want to have a look at your resume, and hopefully call you for that all important interview.

Every good cover letter starts with a heading. Do not leave yours naked and take the time to make the heading stand out by bolding. The heading should include the job that you are applying for and its reference number.

The letter itself should be neatly typed on plain white paper. Format it so it looks professional and worth reading. You want it to be impressive and an untidy cover letter with tons of typing errors will not cut it.

In the letter, start with a strong introductory sentence that will leave the reader wanting to finish the whole thing. There are many people after the same position you want and you need to keep this in mind. This should motivate you to be unique and attention grabbing

You should make sure you have touted your achievements and strong points. You should do this briefly because the cover letter should be a brief affair. This is your main chance to brag about your achievements, politely of course, and you should grab it. But remember that the letter should not be a duplicate of your resume; rather it should complement it. So keep it simple and readable. Make sure you follow the submission guidelines when you are submitting your cover letter. If you are supposed to email it as an attachment, make sure you do that and if you are supposed to paste it on the body of the email, make sure you do that too. If you do this, then you can confidently wait for your prospective employers to call you back.
