Film & 3 Effective Methods For Students To Recall Lines

By Jennifer Marie Anderson

When you are acting, onstage, it goes without saying that there is much that goes into your performance. Not only do you have to figure out how to present yourself, as a physical actor, but there are numerous lines you must be able to recite without losing your place. As a result, you can be certain that lines will have to be remembered but sometimes rehearsal, on its own, isn't enough. In order to become more proficient at remembering your lines, here are 3 methods you should consider.

Make it a point to write down your lines. You may not think that this will have much effectiveness but trust me when I tell you that this can be more useful than you would imagine. The reason for this is because you are going to read through your lines several times in a single sitting, meaning that, eventually, your brain is going to be able to register everything better. Along with speaking them out loud, your writing skills can play into the memorization of your lines.

As you work during rehearsal, it's possible that there are certain strategies you have which aren't the best. With this in mind, try to focus on the methods your cast mates will utilize, whether they are ones you have thought about implementing or not. If they have proven to be successful for your cast mates, who's to say that these processes couldn't work for you as well? Taking cues from others will, without question, allow you to become more proficient as far as recalling lines is concerned.

As you are reciting your lines, on your own, make it a point to move around a bit as well. There are many reasons for this but one of the most important, from what I have seen, is that one's memory can work better with physical action being utilized. Keep in mind that everyone processes information in different ways, which means that this strategy could come into play for you. While your mileage may vary, simple line recital paired with physical activity has more than its fair share of advantages.

Keep in mind that these methods are just a few to help you remember your lines. You want to be able to understand where you have left off, in regards to your performance, and these instances are just a few to help you along. Lines can be forgotten for a number of reasons, whether it is relation to nerves acting up while onstage or what have you. In any event, your lines can be remembered, provided you follow the aforementioned tips in addition to several others.
