The Mind Is In Charge Of The Body; Internal Martial Arts

By Marci Glover

Chinese Taoists came up with a discovery that all actions of our bodies entirely depend on the mind. They used this discovery in coming up with a genre of martial arts known as internal martial arts. In this particular genre, psychological meditations are used in dictating the state of the human body. In California, this art highly practiced.

The people who came up with this genre spent most of their time practicing stunts, mastering them and comprehensively describing skills to other people. They came up with basic ideologies for internal martial arts like power without effort, body balance and energy within. They also came up with major guiding principles for this genre; body and mind relationship and physical mechanisms. These are still the ones giving guidance to practitioners of this trade up to today.

The principle of body mechanism majorly entails the hard vs. Soft tissue support and empty full ideologies. Founders of this principles argued that the body is supported by hard tissues; bones and soft tissues; muscles, ligaments and tendons. This principle states that the bones in a human body interlock in a way that lessens the work done by muscles, tendons and ligaments.

The same principle argues that the body has fulcrums, through whose turning the body avoids a lot of effort. Therefore, an artist must find a suitable position during his/her performance to help push power into the soft tissues. Hence, the body works like a lever system; where less energy is used to produce more energy on the output end.

The other argument in the proposed principles is the empty and full ideology. It was proposed that to win a fight, one needs to identify the weak and strong points on his/her body and that of the opponent. Once, one is aware of these points, he/she will be able to act faster, and will also manage to maintain body balance after a tussle with the opponent. A good fighter should then take advantage of this knowledge to attack those weak areas his opponent.

According to the founders of internal martial arts, pain can be avoided through involving the mind whenever the body is hit by anything that can cause pain. If the mind tells the body that there is no pain, then no pain will be felt. This is because the mind coordinates every activity in the body; including sensing stimuli. So, for physical strength to have any value, the mind must be involved.

Internal martial arts is different from normal stretching and exercises in the sense that, it has a therapeutic impact on the body, and this is lacking in the later. The sung involved in Tai chi and yoga helps the body and mind relax and be free from interruptions from the surrounding. It gets rid of dysfunctions due to bad positioning, balances the muscles and opens meridian channels.

Internal martial arts is a genre that focuses on the ability of the mind to control feelings and how it helps reduce the energy spent during a fight. California has become fond of these practices. Very many people in the city engage in these practices around the city. Recently, a curriculum on this field was started in the city as a way of preserving these practices.
