Reasons To Consider College Counseling

By Lila Bryant

Being a college student is both scary and exciting at the same time. You are about to starting another chapter in your life, and the uncertainties are making you giddy. It is like a refreshing phase, being away from home, going to a new school where you do not really know anyone, having a dorm and a roommate whom you have never met. The possibilities of having a blast is endless, and you can not wait to start.

However, there are two sides to everything. While it is true that your unsupervised lifestyle can bring about a lot of unrestrained freedom, it can also bring about loads of tremendous pressure. It is not all like in the movies where college students are portrayed as the happy go lucky individuals who go ahead and waste money on booze and drugs. No, not at all, especially if your aim is to really finish. All the pressures of college can even break a student, and they may need college counseling to stand back up.

Most colleges offer counseling services to their student populations. These are aimed at the total well being of every individual. Now, many are opposed or are not totally open to the idea of a counseling session because of the negative perception that we have been raised to think about the said topic. But, the truth of the matter is, this is an activity that could be very beneficial for you as you adapt to this new chapter in life.

To the open mind, it can be a very good thing. There are many types of services that your university offers its students. Among these are career exploration, academic advisement, dispute resolutions, personal sessions, and mental health screenings. These sessions can either be done online, one on one and in groups.

Career exploration is best for those who are still going to university this fall semester. Most drop out cases are pinpointed to the indecision and lack of a more clearer goal among incoming freshmen. If you are unsure of what to do next, then this may be a good reason to meet up with a counselor who can sit down with you and evaluate your strengths to come up with a course that will allow you to shine.

Academic advisement is done for those who are already enrolled in college, but are still struggling to juggle all the aspects of college life. This type will help you make the most out of your academic ability. If there are certain areas of study that you are struggling with, then this type of session will be able to really help you out.

Personal counseling is for students who have more concerning issues than most. It aims to help students suffering from bouts of depression and anxiety. Stressed out students who are undergoing crisis situations can also seek help from a counselor.

Mental health issues can also be addressed through counseling. Students who have not handled the strain of the new environment may find themselves breaking under a lot of tremendous pressure. If a students show signs of needing the help of a professional, then able counselors will write a recommendation for that student to receive immediate care.

It can be done with a counselor alone if you are not comfortable with opening up to a large group of people. But, you can not dispute the fact that sharing the load eases the burden, so there are support groups to help. Counseling is not just for crazy people, it is for everyone who needs a little push once in a while.
