You will begin to identify with someone who has been through something similar as you. It makes you feel connected and this gives you a sense of trust for them as well. It is necessary to build up relationships in this way.

Often, rehabs will include family counseling as well. This is necessary since an addict will have done things which were out of character when abusing substances. Families would have been affected. Without this type of counseling, emotins and feelings for the individual can lead toward bitterness, so one needs to work on the relationship.
