There's A Lot Of Information Available At Female Empowerment Websites Dedicated To Young Girls

By Jessica King

There is so much focus today on women's issues, that it can seem like information overload. Still, in the news nearly every week, there is another prominent man accused of abuse of power. Female empowerment websites have flourished in the wake of all this, and many are focusing on the issues faced by young girls. The best of these offer solid advice and a place for women of all ages to express themselves and interact with each other safely and positively.

A number of sites are spotlighting gender stereotypes. They post articles about the obsession many girls have with their body image. They address issues like girls acquiescing to boys when it comes to leadership roles. There are discussions on the subject of girls becoming disinterested in math and science when they reach a certain age and why girls can be ambivalent about their sports abilities.

Clothes are a big part of a lot of little girls' lives. Mothers get frustrated on shopping sprees when all they have to choose from are purple and pink frilly costumes designed to encourage the princess and drama queen mentality. One mother did something about it. She started a website offering bold, bright clothes for girls that are play proof and perfect for even the most adventurous.

The middle school years can be hard. This is a transitional time for both boys and girls. There is a site that addresses some of the preteen issues by pairing high school students with younger girls. The older ones serve as mentors. Each week serious topics like drugs, underage drinking, communicating with parents, and the pressure to be nice are discussed. The stated goal of the site is to create leaders, encourage community service, and build self-esteem.

The power of advertising to sway the decisions of young people is the focus of at least one site. It contrasts powerful messages with those with an intention to harm or manipulate, and discusses how to recognize the difference between the two. The goal is to empower girls to the point that they feel confidence enough to make their own choices regardless of the pressure advertisers try to put on them.

Some sites are more global than others. One such site focuses on education and the fact that, in many countries, girls are still denied access to formal education. Its goal is to raise awareness about this serious problem and direct those who might be suffering under this kind of oppression to valuable resources. Their mission is to work toward a world where all girls have the right, and access, to the same education as their male counterparts.

There are sites that advance the cause of women who have chosen science as their careers. At least one focuses specifically on encouraging women in the area of scientific research. Each year this one awards five postdoctoral researchers significant fellowship grants.

Girls face many challenges in the world today. More and more women are stepping up to the plate to lend a hand to the younger generation. It's important for little girls to know that they can do and be whatever they want.
