A counselor is a person that encourages and guides a person suffering from substance abuse to overcome his or her addiction. Substance abuse is the habitual use of a substance such as drugs or alcohol to alter mind processes. Constant use of these substances cause harm not only to the mind but also to the body and to the social circles of the individual.

When the use of these substances becomes detrimental to the user, it is time to seek the services of a counselor or therapist. There are some instances however an addict goes in for therapy unwilling. Such instances include when ordered by a court or forcibly taken to rehab by force by their loved ones. In such cases the addict is forced to face the reality that they have a problem as they are put in a situation with no access to the substances they rely on.

It is therefore vital to have a counselor who specializes in counseling addicts. The counselor is licensed by the state and is certified by the department of health. They are required to have a Bachelors degree in the very least and if one wants to have their own practice, they must have a graduate degree with the least being a Masters degree.

The substances an addict abuses are more often than not expensive and without the ability to hold down a job, they cannot afford to sustain their habits. But since they need the substances, they will turn to unscrupulous ways to find money to feed their addiction. Some of the ways they do this is by stealing from the public or their family members. It is especially dangerous when they rob a person under the influence as they are more violent and may cause harm or worse, kill.

A counselor is a vital part of any community. He or she is a professional licensed by the state and certified by the department of health with a focus on mental health. They aid the addicts of the community get better which in turn heals the community too as they do not have to put up with the improper habits of addicts.
