How To Become A Shamanic Practitioner

By Karen Miller

Christian, Jewish and Muslim faiths are often the first to come to mind when exploring spiritual paths. However, there are also a number of alternative ideologies and religious paths, one of which involves becoming a Shamanic Practitioner. Some other alternative spiritual paths include becoming a Pagan Priest or Priestess, or Yogi in the Hindu tradition.

As a Shaman can either be a student or teacher, or both, there are many different methods in which an individual can practice. For example, one can practice as a guide or teacher, or one can practice as a follower or student. Whatever the case, most have reported having spiritual experiences that rival that of saints, prophets and drug users through the use of drumming and journeying which are both aspects of the practice.

Individuals need be cautious about those proclaiming to be Shamans which are offering online classes for what is often a rather large fee. Generally, these individuals require payment in advance through Paypal, or other payment programs. As such, it is often advised that before working with any individual in this area that one run a background check and ask to see credentials before moving forward and making a payment or payments as requested.

Non-profit foundations and schools teaching the art and way of the Shaman in the Western world have only come into existence over the last few decades. When seeking out a foundation or school to learn the art and ways of this spiritual path, it is important to enroll in one that has been well vetted. For example, an organization that is dedicated to the study, teaching and preservation of the practice.

The organizational website offers a great deal of information on the practice. In addition, there are several workshops offered which focus on different areas of life. Whether becoming more creative, or better understanding death and beyond, these workshops are often useful in helping overcome a number of obstacles in life.

Some of the workshops offered include The Way Of The Shaman, Power and Soul Retrieval Training, Extraction Healing Training, Shamanism and the Spirits of Nature, Shamanism Divination Training, Shamanic Dream work, Shamanism, Dying and Beyond and Shamanic Training in Creativity. Whether completing one, or all of the workshops, individuals often report having a great deal more insight into Shamanism and journeying into realms that could only be described as truly magical and unique.

A great number of online articles, news reports and research materials can also be found on the organization website. In addition, those interested can join a community circle and participate in online discussions which are held throughout the year. Once having joined, members are provided with a MP3 which features two Shamans providing a great deal of information personal and teaching experiences while going through the training process.

While the discussions are often shorter than most, the MP3 which accompanies all membership levels contains a great deal of insight from two well known Shamans, Ram Dass and Michael Harner about the spiritual path and practice. Each of which have completed work as students and teachers in the tradition. While both now work on a regular basis to teach others the art and way of the shamanic tradition, each have also written a number of books and articles related to personal experiences.
