Applying For A Medical Marijuana Card And Obtaining One Is Legal

By Vick Yan

Many individuals were excited to take advantage of the change in law when certain states ruled in favor of legalizing the use of marijuana. To use this substance without having to worry about breaking the law, one has to obtain and hold what is known as a medical marijuana card. To some, it is a bit more complex than it initially seemed.

The law now allows individuals with a card to be protected under the law only under certain circumstances. The holder must meet certain medical guidelines to be protected. Additionally, this only allows them to carry a small amount that has been predetermined by law.

The states which have passed the new law have varied conditions and guidelines to obtain one. All of them require the person wanting the card to see a doctor. Most would not want to go to their primary physician for a referral for a myriad of reasons. Since this is often the case, medical marijuana doctors specialize in or include this in with their practice offering the services to those wishing to obtain the card.

A doctor visit and referral are imperative, as all the states that passed the law have devised a list of conditions that the patient must suffer from in order to legally qualify for one. So, when a referral is obtained, the patient can then apply for the permit which if issued is good for a certain amount of time.

There have been various issues and changes as it relates to obtaining one. It has been a hot topic among legislators who feel that prior to the law existing, many suffered legally over something that really should never have been a problem. Others contend that the new law should never have been passed and is a license to do something illegal.

Others believe that it has created loopholes that should never exist. It allows some to participate in an activity that they believe will only create larger more serious issues. This is even more critical when small children are around to observe this behavior as it can negatively affect them.

Whether one is for or against it, the law states that one can obtain a medical marijuana card. As long as the guidelines are followed and the fees are payed, it is legal. Like everything else, rules and guidelines change, thus the rules set out currently to obtain one is sure to change as time goes one.
