Shadow Work. It's Not As Sinister As It Sounds

By Evan Sanders

Spending times in the dark and murky places of your life is scary, painful, and troubling. On the other hand, it's something that is incredibly necessary if you want to start the process of healing yourself.

But why?

Because going into the shadows lets you heal deep-seeded pain, experiences and events you truly haven't come to terms with yet and emotions you've had tendency to avoid.

When you go into the shadows with compassion and love and actually attempt to understand the parts of you that could be experiencing discomfort you give yourself the chance to heal.

Wouldn't it feel incredible to live a life where you weren't constantly torn to pieces by what happened in the past and instead lived in the present moment? Wouldn't spending some time with your pains make that trip worthwhile?

But how?

The quickest way to get to the darkest shadows of your life is to enter into a state of meditation. Allow yourself to go back to the deepest and darkest places you can go to at that time, and sit in those places. Relive those moments and watch the emotions of your life swirl around you. Continue to breathe. Continue to stay in the moment as much as you can.

The major skill that you are looking to cultivate here is being able to live in this place - the shadows - and get close enough to the emotions that surround the event without letting them complete overtake your mind. When you can get close enough without being overwhelmed, you know you are in the right spot.

Honestly, it takes some significant practice and a dedication to work through the hard stuff. There's actually no telling you what will precisely happen when you continually do this exercise but the point is that major pains and concerns will release from you over a period of time. That in of itself is what makes the whole journey worthwhile.

The secondary benefit is that you get to unravel your past which allows you to come back into the present moment.

So make an effort to start the healing process by doing the shadow work necessary. Yes it will be scary at times, but it could really help you in the long run.
